If it meant the entire world could live in paradise, would it be worth locking up and torturing one child for their lifetime?

The needs of the whole are more important than the needs of an individual

That's a tough one but I'm inclined to say yes. That one child suffering means that not one more child or any person, for that matter, would ever suffer again.

But does it justify LIVING in a society that WOULD do that TO one child. This is not that one child's choice. It is a society's choice. A choice to inflict suffering on a CHILD.

If it meant the entire world could live in paradise, would it be worth locking up and torturing one child for their lifetime? The real question is, what if you were that child?

Sort of, yes, because someone is that child. My issue has a bit more to do with living in the kind of society where people could live happily while one child suffers.

Somehow I see this conversation going in the direction of Jesus.

Are you saying that Jesus was that child, Leafs? The parallels are quite obvious and I was thinking about going that direction here eventually, but for now, lets forget all about the Jesus/Religion aspect and just take it literally. No metaphors. Just the problem as is.
