Very odd. No reason for him to ever do this, but odd nonetheless.

I saw one comment on the article saying that they owe it to the ECHL for finally coming up with a way to get rid of Bieber

It will bring the team a whole bunch of attendance and merchandise sales. At the same time, apparently Bieber is actually a pretty good hockey player.

I read a few article around the web and apparently it is actually true that he is a decent hockey player. Personally, I believe it would be an amazing career change. He's made his money, had his fame, and his fans. Take up hockey while hes young, leave the signing for when hes old. Try and gain some credibility back.

Maybe he'll get to meet Mike Danton and he can finish a job...
Haha in all seriousness though, i'm 99% sure its just to build interest around the league and Bieber. I'm sure a bunch of players would love nothing more than to knock him - probably not a good idea with the 'good' thing he has going (good being relative; in terms of racking in $, not talent-wise).

Honestly, the kid has talent. He just sings a fucking gay style.

he obviously can't play, clearly the ECHL wants attention.
he's not even 5'6 and he can only bench 120. Have fun playing hockey.
