Yeah:
a) he wanted to re-affirm his loyalty and commitment to the team,
b) he got a NMC
c) he is aging and knows it, and accepted a multi-year deal in case he needs to retire early or what not
d) has been playing with Ottawa forever - Moral: don't expect this to affect the new, high-price precedent the league has established.
