If a player retires over the age of 35 and still has years or partial season left on his contract, the team that owns the rights to that contract MUST pay the remainder of the contract, which would COUNT against the cap. If a player retires under the age of 35, regardless of years remaining on the contract, the player's wages will NOT count against the cap. That is, unless it is outlined in their contract that the team must pay it (like Rheaume, this past season)
