Chapter 1: When Mikey Met Justin...
Laurentian University. Film Theory class. 2006. Two brilliant men sit beside each other, 2 empty seats between them, exchanging no words, and few, if any, momentary glances of acknowledgment.
Applied Media Aesthetics. 2007. Extension of film theory class. The two men join forces to make a film, later titled ". . ." A bond of love and passion forms. Summer comes. Friendship put on hiatus til fall, as summer life kicks in. The two talk casually at most.
Chapter 2: Enter Sim
Fall 2007. The two men share classes, and conversations of a brilliant, and mind-bending nature. Common interests including hockey and fantasy are discovered. One day, Mikey says to Justin...
"Hey chap. Jolly good fun this conversation is and all that, but how's bout you join these sim leagues I partake in. They're ever-so-delightful"
Reluctant, and unconvinced, Justin says, "Sure, sounds swell", secretly not giving a rats ass. Justin returns home, checks out the sim league concept and is absolutely enthralled.
Mike begins making his own sites. Often a dismal failure, the sites usually last for a month or so, then people bugger off, leaving a few die hards to bibble and babble about, doing dick-all.
Chapter 3: The Big One
FINALLY, Justin and Mike come across a brilliant site; one for the record books. Justin works his way up to secondary administrator, based on a MASSIVE series of suggestions and epic debates on creative ways to improve the league. Mikey moves up as well, taking on several key roles on the site, ultimately moving up to simmer.
Despite being run by an uncaring moron, the site flourishes. Justin makes the Colorado Avalanche an absolute powerhouse of his favourite NHLers, and is having a blast. But somewhere, lurking deep in the shadows, waiting for the right moment for evil was...a SABOTEUR!
...And then it was gone. The whole board was deleted.
Mikey and Justin try desperately to grab as many members as possible and revamp a new site, continuing where the old one left off, directing members to this new site. But a mass PM from the original admin informed everyone ANOTHER site was being created as a continuation, and the result was a split, divided, and disheartened league. Both die slow and painful deaths.
Chapter 4: Failure
Intent on keeping the success once touched by the successful sim league alive, Mikey and Justin begin a number of different sim sites, with varying gimmicks (RetroNHL08, NHL '96 etc.) to try to recapture the lost glory. It was all in vein. Nothing would stick. No one gae a damn about these sites, and after a month or so, each individual site died a slow and painful death, one by one.
Disheartened, and frustrated, Justin retired from sim league management, and focused his efforts on other things *cough* pornography *cough*. Mike gave up too...for a while.
Chapter 5: ManNHL
On February 13, 2008, at 12:37am, Micheal Aldred registered ManNHL.proboards.com. He messaged Justin, and said, "dude, lets give'er another go".
Justin, still disheartened and fatigued from the previous failures just 2 months previous, said to Mikey, "Dude, I have no interest. It's too much."
"Dude, lemme know if you change your mind. New site is ManNHL."
What a stupid, stupid, STUPID fucking name, Justin thinks to himself, venturing off to watch a movie or something. Surely the site would die with a STUPID name like that. How fucking stupid.
Chapter 6: Player Rep
Justin feels guilty. He SHOULD support his friend with the poorly-named sim league, but he REALLY doesn't wanna build another team in the midst of a failing league. He thinks on it...
A while later, Justin returns to Mikey with a proposition...
"Hey Mikey...this league you, like, are doing, what if like...instead of a team, I be, like, a player manager. And like, the GMs have to, like, negotiate contracts with me in order to get free agents and junk. I won't take a team, that will be, like, my only job on the site. How, like, about that?"
Mikey: "Me likey".
Chapter 7: The Sweet Smell of Success
Word spread (or something) and ManNHL actually came alive. People, generally, were fans of the PR concept, and it gave ManNHL a stand-out element that other sites didn't have. Combining that with a strong core group of about 10 extremely dedicated members, ManNHL was an absolute blast.
During this time, Justin and Mikey found a loophole in the popular "Hockey Top 100" site that nearly all sim sites were a part of. Once exploited, ManNHL was routinely #1 or 2 on the ranking, and membership exploded, and for the first time in our sim league experience, an actual waiting list grew...and grew and grew. At its peak, PR estimates our waiting list was about 15 members long.
Chapter 8: Blackout
Somewhere in here, during the early days of the successful league, a server error caused ManNHL to disappear. Then-Bruins GM bruinsftw jumped into action and contacted ProBoards and a backup was restored. Nothing was lost, and we were able to continue. Had the ManNHL boards been lost that day, it would have died. Permanently. bruinsftw received a special thanks page in honour of his actions. Since then, we have become pricks, and the page is buried in the archives somewhere, but we love him and his actions none-the-less and won't forget his heroism in our time of need.
Chapter 9: Season 1
DUring this time, a few rather unique changes came into effect. To cut down on sim post times, Mikey and Justin decided to post screen caps rather than type stats. Members were happy, as this showed clear lack of tampering, a problem long-evident in sim leagues filled with admin cup wins on an annual basis.
At the end of the year, Ottawa took home ManNHL's first ever Stanley Cup. No one cared, as Ottawa's GM was a dink, so we moved forth with season 2.
To be continued...
