From today until Monday, all teams are allowed to demote any wages they chose to demote to the minors. No team can put a claim on any given player from now until Monday morning at 12:01 A.M.
That being said, if a player is called back up for duty after Monday and is 1M and over in wages, that player, unless on a rookie contract, must pass through re-entry waivers, and if claimed will be claimed by half of his salary, the other half being eaten by the original team.

Can we trade players that we have sent to the minors in the free demotion period?
Without passing them through the recall waivers

yes, and if the free demotion period is still in play, they can recall that player without anyone claiming him. anytime after the demotion period, however, that player will be considered to have reported to the team's farm system he was dealt to, and if recalled, he will be on re-entry waivers.
