Chapter 10: Cass
Back in the day, whenever Mikey started a league that was slow to fill, he dragged his then-girlfriend Cass along, and made her take some shitty team to help keep things alive. She was a very personable GM, and everyone got along with her. Or pissed her off and got into melodramatic PMS-fights with her, resulting in endless hilarity. But most significant here, was she was the only female life form on the site, and for many raging hormonal 14 year old boys, she was "da bomb". Despite not knowing a thing about her interests, appearance, taste in men, whatever, Cass (and Mike) reported that Cass was hit on about 1-2 times a week via PM. This amused me, and as such, I felt this was worth noting, though I forgot it previously. Cass was also known for collecting brothers and then never letting them go. Though retired (and now Leafs' ex), Cass was a large part of ManNHL's activity, since hormonal boys will spend hours talking to any female life form apparently. To this day, Cass is still one of only 2 females to ever take part in a ManNHL site.
Chapter 11: Draft Dodgers
ManNHL's first-ever off-season was much smoother than every subsequent one. Victor Hedman was drafted first overall, by Phoenix (via Montreal) followed by Tavares ( by Toronto via Phoenix) and Evander Kane (by Vancouver, via NY Rangers). In fact, not a single damned team had their own pick in the top five, and only 20 teams in the whole 2-round draft drafted in their own place. We realized, people didn't care THAT much about picks, and that next year, since we would not have a draft list, we would need to do something a bit different. We took note, and filed that note away for future reference. We should have burned it.
Chapter 12: Off-Season
During the Off-season, in an effort to create more ways for GMs to sign a player without hurting their cap hit, PR devised a socially-conscious means of doing so - Charity Donations! Players could request (and be offered) donations to be made on their behalf. All this really meant was a GM posted a bullshit amount of bullshit money in a thread in the Charities section, but it also created a general awareness of these charities across ManNHL. Though I doubt anyone gave a flying fish fin, they were real charities, outlining real causes, and it felt good to create such awareness. I know I learned about a lot of good causes...SHUT UP. I DID!
Chapter 13: Let's Do it Again!
After just 2 months of real-time off-season, Season 2 was ready to go. Remember, this was on NHL 08, and updating rosters, overalls, and creating new players took time. Not to mention UFA and all that crud as well. PR also created his firsts real ManNHL banner, and has more or less been doing so since then, much to everyone's chagrin. On August 8, 2008, Season 2 officially began. Two real-time months later, it ended. End of story. Or is it?
Chapter 14: Walking Down the Hall
During Season 2, ManNHL really began to come into its own. Really feeling the community aspect of the league, Mikey and PR wanted to really give back to the league. After developing a super-secret formula, PR implemented a ManNHL Hall of Fame, which ensured it would be HARD to get into. PR had seen lots of sim league Hall of Fames consist of two people - the simmer, and the site administrator. A few weeks later, on Sept 29, 2008 the New Jersey Devils became the first member to reach these confidential goals, and was the first-ever ManNHL Hall of Fame member. For those who care, which I know is all of you, the "secret criteria" were basically to never have had a strike, and to have over 1000 posts, many of which actually contributed something to the site - this is why 55587crosby, despite having 1000 posts in his first month, was never a Hall of Famer - he said nothing - but with actual words. Then double posted more nothing. Followed by a TRIPLE post of...you got it...even MORE nothing.
Chapter 15: Classic Cup
The Stanley Cup championship in Season 2 was a lot more interesting. First of all, Ottawa was not involved, so people cared again. Old rivals graced the ice for a chance to renew former glory of their franchise years, as the Edmonton Oilers took on the Boston Bruins. In a hard-fought war, with casualties on both sides, the Bruins downed the Oilers in 6 epic battles. Boston's Cup-winning banner was displayed above the ManNHL forum, congratulating the Bruins on their Cup win. Edmonton became bitter and withdrawn.
Chapter 16: Epic Off-Season Begins
On October 21, 2008 ManNHL entered off-season. We knew a lot of changes would be taking place, as the majority of the league wanted to upgrade to NHL'09 - a transition that would bring about the longest off-season in sim-league history (for a site that survived it). Mike will have to fill in a lot of blanks here, but I believe first, there was a massive computer error, involving the loss of substantial roster data. Then I think we went to '09 on 360, and poor Mikey had to do a MASSIVE roster overhaul, while attending school full-time and balancing life’s little dramas. Mikey, was this off-season the time you found that drunk guy sleeping in your shed at 2am? Or was that season 3? Anyways, so the off-season continued. And continued. And...continued. Players signed. On Dec 14, 2008, the Philadelphia Flyers GM, hockeyfan101 (current Penguins) completed the criteria, and was indicted into the ManHall. Yay 1000 posts?
Chapter 17: GM Rep
MSN. 3-way Convo. Mike. PR. Cor99. Midnight.
Cor: "lol. You geys shud haf sum srt thing were a GM can say lol thingss and 2 you geys and lol we can all listen to them for and feedback lol on them and sum and rum lol and they can lol be a like, those player reps for the genrl lol lol managres but not leafs cause leafs has a teams lol and sims and i lol should be the gauy to do these job becuase i am cor and i know whatiia asia= 123 in the Fred Penner and was in lol the fist one if thou lol and then one. or not. lol lol lol lol lol lol."
Mike: "If he was coherent, he may have actually said something there"
PR: "That incoherent ramble gives me an idea"
Mikey: "Me too"
PR & Mike: "Let’s have a GM Rep!"
Everyone in the league was put on a list and a league-wide vote was cast. You could not vote for yourself, and after 3 rounds of heavy voting, Quinn aka hockeyfan101 (NOT cor99) was elected ManNHL's first ever GM Rep. The result was a number of long late-night discussions on MSN making sure everything was up to snuff, from a players perspective (PR), an administrative/simming perspective (Leafs) and a GM Perspective (Quinn). As time went on, less time was spent on meetings, and more time was spent making crappy puns on Quinn’s name. They were Quinn-tastic times.
To be continued....
