The Toronto Maple Leafs have called a press conference to confirm the signing of forward Adam Deadmarsh. The 33 year old Canadian has returned from retirement and signed a 5 year deal with the buds at $2.5 million per season. "I am happy to return to the NHL, and most importantly, I am happy that I returned here in Canada. I think I can teach the kids here a lot as we progress over the next few years, and I am looking forward to challenging teams for the Stanley Cup. I felt sick after being away from the game and when the call came to my agent, 007, that the Leafs were interested in my services, I have to admit, I was a little shocked. I had a long conversation with Jason Allison, and Eric Lindros - both of which told me to go with my heart, and that lead me to sign this contract. I've been feeling better and better over the last few months, and I do feel that I am 100% for my return to the league. I'm only thankful that the Leafs have given me this opportunity to return. I feel that my life has changed to a new direction - turned over a new leaf if you will, and I'm happy with my decision to come back and start over here in Toronto." The Leafs Organization.

Wow.. Why were no other teams given the option to go after him? What's his rating?

And he retired because of a concussion which caused him the inability to play further. Therefore, I say this signing is void and Deadmarsh can't be signed.

Lastly, was this discussed with the PR?

The player rep listens to offers for ALL players. And considers them. Feel free to contact me about anyone, as Leafs did.

This is fair and legal, in a matter of speaking. Deadmarsh was not listed as a free agent as he was retired, that being said, I've talked him into returning. This would be similar of that of Brian Berard retiring from hockey after taking a stick in the eye in a Leafs uniform. 18 months later, he returns from retirement as a ranger.

haha, well I thought it was, until I realized there are a lot more retired and better players so I don't mind. I didn't know this was possible, that's all.

it's legal in the real game, and my guy has only been out a short while, and is 33. I'm not saying the league is going to bring back a whole bunch of guys, but the likes of lindros/allison, these kind of guys can come back, easily, if negotiated properly. The only thing to watch out for is technically, i can't bring them back til next year if they're not in the game. as such, a specific name to look for is ricci, who remains in the game. think about that one lol.
Also, just because I brought a guy out of retirement and signed him, doesn't mean you HAVE to rush out and sign someone now. I thought it would fit my team well as we're young and i can demote a player to let deadmarsh teach them. I also have a shit load of cap to capitalize on. If you're in the same boat, feel free to negotiate, but I can pretty much tell you there are few players that are coming back. If they're in the game, great, sign them up, but if they need to be created, you won't see results til next season, and you'll have to take on his salary for this one just to have him.
