What does "rights or contract, - TBD" mean?
If he is a pending UFA, its his rights. If he signs a contract, then is traded before UFA opens, he needs a new contract. As we said last season, you can't sign a guy to an extension then trade him before it kicks in. We just void the contract and a new one needs to be worked out.

It was done out of respect to Halischuk based on a pm sent by Preds when I posted it. The Leafs know there are one of two options in this deal for Halischuk's decision. We're comfortable either way and again, out of respect to Halischuk, you have a pm that was missed prior to posting.

Regardless of what the PM says (which I have read, btw), what I posted is accurate. He will need to negotiate a new deal with Toronto, if he is willing to do that. I primarily wanted that to be clear for people who are thinking about trading for guys that were just signed. New contracts will need to be worked out from scratch. The previously agreed-upon one becomes meaningless, and has no bargaining power one way or another. Thus wasting time.  |

It was out of respect to Halischuk. It would have been set to agree upon his arrival in Toronto. Regardless, Leafs accepted it either way.
