To Tampa Bay LW Mason Raymond 3.0 1-way UFA 2017 G Jonathan Quick 3.0 1-way UFA 2017 To New Jersey LW Simon Gagne $4.75M UFA 2016 G Jimmy Howard $5M UFA 2016 and the better of: 2016 Calgary Flames 2nd Round Pick 2016 Tampa Bay Lightning 2nd Round Pick Breakdown: NJ has Quick as a backup; Howard will now back up Brodeur. Simon Gagne has 16 pts on the 2nd line of a mediocre-bad team. Raymond (as per Leafs last night) has 10 on the 3rd line. Expectations are for Gagne to do better with NJ than what he did in TB. Overall: Quick>Howard Gagne>Raymond 2nd rounder is added to compensate for the slight salary increase and the perceived difference in value of Quick over Howard VS Gagne over Raymond (in essence, to balance it out).

Also, "better of" means the pick that will allow NJ to select earlier in the upcoming draft.

Who was this surrogate-negotiated with? On paper, its terrible. NJ gains 3.75M in cap (including a 5M BACKUP goalie) to gain an additional 6 points of offense? And 6 points of offense that will be playing SECOND line, based on production patterns (meaning NJ has 4 forwards (and 3 defencemen) with more points than Gagne).

2nd RD picks are just a waste of time now and definitly doesn't make up for cap dump that this trade is

So what is 16 points on a bad team's 2nd line if he would be on the 2nd line of a top-tier team, 25? Its all relative. All games played by TB are either high-scoring wins (few) or shutout losses (many).

Not any worse of a pick than a 1st rounder of the Cup champ. Nice try though.

All games played by TB are either high-scoring wins (few) or shutout losses (many). All well and good, but why should NJ take on almost 4M in cap to add an older player to a 2nd line mix that is working well right now? And the thing about the 5M backup? Quick is a good, cheap solition for now (as backup) and for next year, when Brodeur almost certainly retires. a 2nd round pick, which according to you is a 31st overall pick, is not worth 4M in cap space. Hell, even if there was a 1st in this trade I would be skeptical. It just makes no sense to gain 4M cap, about 5 years in age. NOT TO MENTION, everyone you are sending to NJ needs renegotiated this year, whereas Quick and Raymond are locked up (CHEAP) until 2017

Yeah I don't like this deal from a NJ standpoint; too much cap gained, little improvement for such a cap gain, and receiving free agent (in one year) players in return.

2nd round picks can turn out to be full time NHLers in this sim if you give 'em 2-3 years in the minors. They're not useless at all. But $5M for back up seems bad for NJD though. Otherwise this actually is a good deal especially since players play DRASTICALLY different on different team.
