Deadline Deals Breakdown:
To Montreal:
Brian Gionta
To New Jersey:
Scott Upshall
1st 08
2nd 08
4th 08
Ek's Take:
The Canadiens added some muche needed offense to their club to aid Jason Blake in the long-run, but the cost seemed rather high. Though Scotty will more than likely be a third line player for the rest of his career, the notion of a 1st, 2nd and 4th in this upcoming draft (expected to be a deep talent pool) seems a bit of a high cost to bring in Gionta, who is nearing 30 years of age. Hopefully this will pan out for the Habs in the short run.
To New Jersey:
2nd and 3rd in 08
To San Jose:
Mark Recchi
Ek's Take:
It looks like the Devils are going to make a splash in the draft this season as they have successfully traded their second veteran away for youth or draft picks. I guess there just wasn't anything else left in the tank to make a push for the playoffs this season. It will be interesting to see if they hang onto Brodeur, though the rumor has it that the next player to leave is none other than Fredrick Modin or Jamie Lagenbrunner. Keep an eye out for the Devils this deadline.
To Anaheim:
Christian Ehrhoff
To San Jose:
Kimmo Timonen
Ek's Take:
It's a typical offensive defensemen for offensive defensemen trade, regardless of one making a huge amount compared to the other. San Jose, in my opinion, won this deal. Timonen is a stud of a defensemen and it does't seem like Anaheim is done yet. I'd suspect a youth movement has begun in California.
RUMORS
I've been hearing a lot that the Leafs have decided to let Vesa Toskala find a new home. It seems they've allowed Carey Price to take over the for the rest of the season, believing it's not this year they'll win, but next when the youngsters get that much better. It is believed the Blue Jackets, Wild, and Capitals are all in the running for the goaltender, while the price seems to be a rookie/prospect or 2 and a 1st.
