A Closer Look Volume 1:
John Kordic[/center]
Fought for the Game; Fought for His Life
After spending the majority of his short career as a great enforcer for the Leafs and Canadians, and an even short stint in Washington and Quebec, John Kordic was known for one thing and one thing only, fighting.
After receiving nearly a thousand penalty minutes in only 244 games, the term enforcer was simply his title. Brother of Dan Kordic, who spent his career in Philadelphia as an enforcer as well, John Kordic had a short lived career. He fought the likes of Wendell Clark, Dave Brown, and Basil McRae in the late 80s, but it was a night in 1992 that became the biggest fight of his life.
On August 8th, 1992, John Kordic was said to have been a major complaint by the other guests in a hotel near L’Ancienne-Lorrette, Quebec. The cops were called, and they found John Kordic drugged up on cocaine. The event is somewhat cloudy, but the moments that past after they were called in to “calm down” the enforcer turned deadly. John Kordic fought five cops off, until finally, he became tired, and was beaten to death by the so-called “public safety officers”. Rumors suggest that the cops were simply trying to prove their strength against the popular enforcer who played more than four years in Quebec/Montreal. But as he grew tired after the fifth cop, they jumped him at the same time, and turned the enforcer into a victim. He laid unconscious for most of the beating, while the cops simply continued to strike the helpless body.
A short lived career for a strong enforcer for three Canadian teams.
John Kordic, born on March 22, 1965, died August 2, 1992.
