Player: Anssi Salmela Stats: 48 1 6 7 -11 Sitting Jury: Nashville, Pittsburgh, Carolina
For New Jersey: Proposed Salary:$0.620M Anssi is a serviceable defenseman for our team. He knows his role and gets the job done. With that said, he is nothing more than a fringe bottom pairing d-man and mainly a #7. As a guy known mainly for his offense, with pretty shaky defense, he only managed 7 points in 48 games last season. He made $0.6125M last season and we are still offering him a raise to just simply continue playing in his role.
For Salmela: Proposed Salary: 0.95M We went a little higher than usual on our end because we feel NJ has gone extremely low on his offers and want to give the Arbitration Jury a fair range to consider. Devils has turned down offers as low as 0.7M, and we feel it's time to move on. Most players throughout the league in the same position as Salmela received an appropriate salary increase, and we feel that just because NJ joined late and did not have time to re-negotiate with everyone else, that he should not be given special treatment. There is half a league full of players who were given fair contracts, both from real-life negotiations previously, or from PR here, and we feel Anssi should be given his fair slice as well. We also feel that Anssi's projected role as a fringe player on NJ should not reflect salary considerations, since it is not reflective of his free-market value. It is simply reflective of NJ not needing this player's services, and that perhaps FA would be a better option.
Remember, you don;t need to choose a side, so much as decide on a salary. It can be anything.

$700,000 - That is fair value. NJ states reasons for the limited increase and I agree with them.
I don't see a team offering up a significant pay increase for Anssi's services. He knows his role a fringe 3rd pairing player with offensive ability and low defensive strength. With the limited points he put up in his time this year, it is evident he is not deserving of a significant increase.

Pretty much what Pens said, but I'll throw 700k out there.

I must say, you guys did a good job deliberating on this one. Very fair process and I like this arbitration thing that Man does. I haven't seen it in any league before.
With that said, I will have to part ways with Anssi. He's a great guy and good player who even has a small cult following among our fanbase (Nashville knows). We just do not have the cap space for this.
Good luck with everything Anssi and who knows, we might cross paths in the future.
